The basis for a strategy to combat deforestation is information, says an Ipam member

In an interview with CNN, the executive director of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (Ipam), André Guimarães, stated that the strategic basis for combating deforestation is information. For this reason, the specialist expressed concern about recent speeches by authorities in the country on the subject, as made by President Jair Bolsonaro (no party).

“It is worrying to see the highest authorities responsible for combating deforestation and for looking out for the environment in Brazil uninformed and without access to information, as they are saying, about what is happening in the Amazon”, said Guimarães.

“The basis of a strategy to curb crime that dominates a large part of this deforestation is intelligence, it is information.”

This Friday (19) Bolsonaro made a live on social networks and said again that the “Amazon Forest does not catch fire”. According to the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), deforestation in the Amazon reached 13,235 square kilometers between August 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021, up 21.97% compared to last year.

Vice President Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) said the government is still analyzing the data. In addition, the Ministry of the Environment stated in a published note that the deforestation recorded at the site during this period does not reflect recent conservation actions by the federal government.
