The alarm: sale of fake Covid vaccines on the “dark web”

The Covid vaccine is already on sale. Not through legitimate channels. On the dark web, the part of the internet that is not visible through search engines, there are fake ads for the sale of vaccines against Covid-19 according to Check Point Research, the Threat Intelligence division of Check Point Software Technologies. On the same sites you can also find drugs that would cure the virus.

The coronavirus vaccine business is too tempting for criminals.

There are many ways of possible attacks. The European Medicines Agency has reported being hit by hacker and advertisements have appeared on the dark web for vials of the vaccine that is not yet distributed in the European Union with prices ranging from 400 to over 1000 euros to be paid in bitcoin. They are scams. Also because the Pfizer vaccine, the first to arrive in Italy, has storage methods that are not available: it must be kept at minus 80 degrees.

Interpol had issued an alert for possible theft and counterfeiting of the vials. In the past months there have also been attempts to foray into the laboratories that were working on the vaccine. Behind this, there would also be the search for secret information. In the past months there have also been scams related to the sale of gels and masks and attacks with a ransom demand after hospital blockages.

«Europol, the European Union agency aimed at fighting crime in the EU territory», explains the security company Check Point Research, «has already issued an early warning notification on vaccine crime during the pandemic. All sellers found only accept bitcoin payments, minimizing the chances of being tracked; further questioning the authenticity of the drugs they are selling. When Check Point Research communicated with a supplier, the latter made it clear that they were selling an unspecified Covid-19 vaccine for 0.01 BTC (about $ 300), stating that 14 doses were needed.
