The accusation of fraud, a strategy that Donald Trump uses and abuses

It was 2:21 am, precisely, this Wednesday, November 4 when Donald Trump pushed open the door of the “east” room of the White House. It was the first speech of the outgoing American president since the closing of the polling stations and it was going to punctuate the rest of the election night across the Atlantic. In front of a hundred of his supporters, the billionaire does not bother with the few million votes that still have to be counted and already claims victory in a confused declaration and while some States have stopped counting the ballots for the time of the night: “This is a fraud against the American people. It is a shame for our country. We were winning this election. Frankly, we won this election. ”

A few hours later, it is on Twitter that he evokes “surprise bulletins”, astonished at the changing dynamics and now favorable to his opponent Joe Biden: “Last night, I had a good lead in many decisive states , then, one by one, they began to magically disappear with the appearance and counting of surprise ballots. Very strange. ”

We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election. We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!

This is not a first for Donald Trump, as he has used this strategy in the past. In 2012, during the duel between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, he peddled the rumor according to which voting machines would erase the votes in favor of the Republican candidate. After the election of Obama, he will get carried away on Twitter, already one of his favorite social networks: “This vote is a sham. We are not a democracy! During the Republican primaries of 2016, the candidate Trump accuses his competitor Ted Cruz of having cheated in Iowa and calls for the organization of a new ballot, even the strict cancellation of the votes for Senator Cruz.

“Crooked Hillary” and “Corrupt Joe”

A few months later, during the 2016 presidential campaign, he did not hesitate to accuse his opponent Hillary Clinton of fraud. “Believe me, we will have to be careful on November 8, because this election will be rigged,” he assures us on Fox News in August, even finding a nickname for the Democrat: “crooked Hillary”. In 2016, he even broke the American democratic tradition and refused to commit to accepting the results of the poll. In November, despite his victory over the Democratic candidate, he will not even accept that she won the popular vote (48.18% of the vote against 46.09% for him) and will ensure that he “won the popular vote [si on déduit] the millions of people who voted illegally […], especially in Virginia, New Hampshire and California ”.

Rebelote for the 2020 campaign. This time, it is “corrupt Joe” (Biden, editor’s note) who finds himself in his sights, and very early in the campaign. Covid-19 pandemic requires, postal voting has been greatly increased. By November 3, more than 100 million Americans had already voted. And, according to estimates, it was mainly Democratic voters who favored this method of advance voting. All summer long, Donald Trump has cast doubt on the validity of this voting method, accusing the US Post in particular of not being able to properly process these letters because of the pandemic. He even swore, on several occasions: “It will be the most rigged ballot in the history of the United States. ”

The Cocoe of the UMP

A situation which is reminiscent of other political misadventures, this time French. In 2012, while the UMP must choose a leader, the two competitors – François Fillon and Jean-François Copé – claim victory. On the evening of the results, the team of the second announced to seize the internal commission for irregularities when the former Prime Minister retorts: “I will not let the militants steal the victory. “La Cocoe (commission for the organization and control of electoral operations of the UMP), responsible for monitoring the smooth running of the election of the president of the opposition party, did not manage to decide between them in a first time. It took twenty-four hours of checks before she declared Jean-François Cope’s team victorious.

But, in the United States, it is the Supreme Court – the Scotus – which decides. This is the bet of Donald Trump, who has already announced that he wants to seize the judicial authority. He hopes to repeat the scenario of the 2000 election which was played out in Florida with a difference of only 537 ballots. On December 12, 2000, for the first time in a presidential election, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no longer enough time for a new count in Florida, as the deadline for nominating large voters had passed by many. States. Six days later, George W. Bush was thus elected 43e President of the United States facing Democrat Al Gore.
