There is a political cost to making decisions that not everyone will be happy with, that’s why we should all understand that the Ministry of Health does not exist only for those who are employed in Health or deal with Health, but mainly for the patients, the minister emphasized Health Thanos Pleuris speaking today at the 5th Investgr forum, a conference dealing with foreign investments in Greece.
The Minister of Health referred to the example of EOPYY, which – as he said – is an organization created to purchase services. “So he has two ways to do this: If you say I will buy from everyone, I will have a low-level service provision that the Greek patient will pay for. But if you say I will buy from the best and at the best prices, the citizen will it has a better quality service”, he emphasized and added that this is a central reform that has a political cost.
About the medicine sector he said that it is not a separate sector by itself, as all health should be treated holistically. “We start with prevention so that we don’t need a lot of drugs and a lot of hospitalizations, we go to primary health care which means we have a personal doctor to direct us, we strengthen the secondary with more modern hospitals and cost control and we create a network of private health through of EOPYY, while at the same time we go to outpatient care” emphasized the Minister of Health, explaining that all this is an equation which, together with the medicine, must be treated as an expense, as he said.
Thanos Pleuris argued that the pandemic has taught us that money for Health should not be regretted and that is why we must adapt and absorb in the best possible time the funding from the European Union which reaches 1.5 billion euros .
He also said that the health map of the country will be redefined, citing an example: “When a hospital is 20 km from another hospital, they cannot both have the same clinics”, he said characteristically.
Speaking finally about the investments in Health, he said that their development is consistent with better health in general. “In medicine, obviously when the private sector enters and in research/innovation as well as in production it leaves a positive sign for health as well as the economy”, he concluded.
