Tests of RTX 40 mobile video cards appeared: more powerful than desktop models of the previous generation

On the opening day of CES 2023, NVIDIA employees held a major presentation during which they officially announced a whole line of mobile video cards – RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 and RTX 4050. It is worth noting that the “green team” does not have desktop below the RTX 4070 Ti (which was originally intended to be sold as the 12GB RTX 4080), and laptop graphics cards don’t match desktop graphics. This means that the RTX 4090 for the mobile platform and the RTX 4090 for the desktop are completely different things. And today, January 7, the results of testing new video cards in benchmarks appeared on the network, which demonstrate that they really have plenty of power.

For example, the RTX 4090 (laptop model) achieved a Geekbench score of 5,210k, which is more than the desktop RTX 3090 and only slightly less than the highest-performing RTX 30-series graphics card, the RTX 3090 Ti. This means that this flagship laptop graphics card will theoretically be able to run video games in 4K resolution at the highest graphics settings with a stable frequency of 60 FPS or more. However, there is a logical question about cooling – the RTX 3090 Ti has a huge heatsink and three fans of a decent diameter, which is simply impossible to squeeze into a thin laptop case.

However, the less productive models in the lineup also have decent capabilities. For example, the RTX 4080 laptop video card shows almost the same scores in the synthetic test as the desktop version of the RTX 3080. But then parity begins – the RTX 4070 laptop video card was almost twice as weak as the mobile RTX 4090, so in the end it is a notch below the RTX 3070 Ti for laptops (yes, not for desktop). And that’s where the amazing performance ends, because the RTX 4060 and RTX 4050 models are, as you’d expect, very meager.

However, it is the models from RTX 4050 to RTX 4070 that will be the most in demand on the market, because their power consumption is noticeably lower than that of flagship solutions, which means that the laptop will not need such powerful cooling. How laptop manufacturers plan to deal with the overheating problems of the RTX 4090 in the case of a relatively compact gadget is a question that has not yet been answered. Probably, performance limits will be applied to prevent overheating, but then getting such impressive scores in benchmarks will definitely not work.
