Tesla doubles discounts offered on Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles

Tesla has doubled discounts offered on its Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles delivered to the US this month, according to its website, fueling concern that demand for cars from Elon Musk’s automaker may be waning.

“Take delivery of a new Model 3 or Model Y between December 21-31, 2022 for a $7,500 credit and 10,000 free Supercharger miles,” says the EV maker on its website.

Charge credits also apply to Model S and Model X vehicles, but not to the $7,500 discount.

Discounts are commonplace in the automotive industry, but the $7,500 Tesla is now offering stands out in this current environment because the auto industry has largely managed to pull back on such incentive programs in recent years, with a continuing shortage of cars driven by supply chain constraints.

“Manufacturer rebates have increased slightly from the prior month, however they remain historically suppressed,” said Thomas King, president of JD Power’s data and analytics division. On average, automakers spent $1,187 per vehicle on such deals in December, and some Tesla rivals raised prices on some models.

Musk often brags about how Tesla sets itself apart from traditional automakers by not relying on the kind of marketing tools, like ads or discounts, to increase demand.
