Finally, in the registered and non-landfills of the Peloponnese Region, for which our country pays high fines every year, puts the PPP project for the integrated waste management, by TERNA Energy.
This marked yesterday the arrival of the first garbage trucks of the Municipality of Tripoli at the Transitional Management Unit in Paleochouni, which will serve Arcadia, Corinth and Argolida.
As stated in Capital.gr o Peloponnese Regional Governor Panagiotis Nikas, “from tomorrow we will start direct cooperation with all municipalities in the region for the final closure of landfills that burden the environment and threaten public health.”
According to the same, the RIS (waste management) has been requested the complete recording and recording of the illegal and non-landfills of the Region. So far we have no answer and we are waiting for it. It goes without saying that the landfills – licensed and not – are closed gradually, at the same time the process of their registration and restoration begins, while the municipalities are obliged to transfer their waste to the unit “, noted the governor.
“Within the 14 months that the transitional management will last (s.s. will be followed by the start of the integrated management), the issue of landfills in the Peloponnese Region will have been closed”, said Mr. Nikas.
The project concerns the construction of the most modern waste management unit in the country and one of the most modern in Europe.
The total duration of the contract is 28 years (two-year construction period and 26-year operating period).
The amount of the investment amounts to 152,000,000 euros, of which 62,500,000 euros come from an NSRF subsidy.
The project is expected to create 600 jobs during the construction period, 200 permanent jobs during the operating period and a large number of parallel jobs.
Finally, with the full operation of the project, landfilling will be prevented and at least 65% of biodegradable materials will be utilized, 50,000 tons of liquid waste will be diverted from landfill, while green energy will be produced to serve the needs of 6,000 households, while avoiding release of 24,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The fines were reduced
Greece has reduced by 32% the fines imposed by the European Court of Justice for uncontrolled waste disposal, according to recent data from the Ministry of Environment.
Specifically, 4 HADAs were restored, while the fine for two HADAs that were closed was eliminated. With the write-off of the six fines, the cases of HADA for which our country managed to be exempted from fines in the last two years amount to 21. The financial benefit reaches 1,680,000 euros, given that the annual fine for each of the cases HADA is 80,000 euros.
According to the plan of the General Secretariat for Coordination and Waste Management of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the remaining 44 cases of fines will be addressed by the end of 2022.
