Amid the criminal prosecution of Telegram founder Pavel Durov and tightening regulatory rules in France, the administration of the messenger decided to suspend the operation of its cryptocurrency wallet services in the country.

The company noted that this step will allow us to avoid possible legal complications in the future, despite the fact that Telegram fully complies with European standards, including the requirements of the Digital Services Act, which regulates the behavior of digital platforms in the European Union.

Let us recall that at the end of August, French authorities arrested Pavel Durov on charges of managing illegal content on the Telegram platform, such as distributing child pornography and drug trafficking.

Law enforcement officials said the government’s charges were based on provisions in national law that require anyone offering encryption services within the country to notify the French Cyber Security Agency (ANSSI) of the technical specifications of cryptographic tools, including software source code.
