Telegram has begun to actively respond to requests from EU authorities

The Telegram messenger has begun to promptly process and respond to legal requests from European authorities, the newspaper reports. Liberation citing law enforcement officials.

According to available information, Telegram responded to requests from the French National Police and Gendarmerie’s Juvenile Affairs Department on several criminal investigations, providing information that could identify suspects. In particular, we are talking about crimes against children.

“The door does indeed open,” the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed.

In this regard, French supervisory authorities have been advised to resume their own investigations into Telegram, which have been suspended until now.

“We have noted that for some time now Telegram has been more willing to cooperate with the justice system,” the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office told the publication.

On August 24, French authorities detained Telegram founder Pavel Durov as part of an investigation opened on July 8 against an “unidentified person” under 12 articles.

The latter include the illegal provision of cryptographic services, refusal to cooperate with law enforcement, complicity in the distribution of child pornography, assistance in drug trafficking and the activities of organized crime groups.

On August 28, Durov was placed under judicial control with bail of €5 million and an obligation to report to the police twice a week. He is prohibited from leaving France until March 2025.

In his first post after his release, Durov announced enhanced moderation in Telegram.

He said the messenger already had multiple channels for law enforcement agencies to contact, including an official representative to the EU and a hotline to combat the threat of terrorism in France.
