Spain's largest telecommunications operator, Telefonica, has announced a partnership with blockchain oracle provider Chainlink to combat SIM card spoofing, a popular attack vector against users.

A SIM swapping attack allows a hacker to take control of a victim's phone number, including receiving SMS messages. Of course, the hacker can then gain access to bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, and other sensitive information.

Through the partnership, Telefonica and Chainlink will be able to “securely connect” smart contracts to GSMA Open Gateway APIs. The integration will allow checking data from different sources and the structures of common network APIs designed to access operator networks.

As Yaiza Rubio Vinuela, director of metaverse at Telefonica, emphasized, the partnership will also make the company “open to the implementation of Web3 projects” and will be the first step towards building “the networks of the future.”

Telefonica has long had an interest in the cryptocurrency space and metaverses. Thus, support for cryptocurrency payments for users appeared back in 2022, and in 2023 the company entered into a partnership with the gaming blockchain company Gamium.
