Teachers at the school where an attack left 4 children dead this Wednesday (5) in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, reported that they tried to lock babies inside a classroom to prevent them from being attacked by a man who allegedly had a psychotic break.
The commander of the 10th Military Police Battalion in Blumenau, Márcio Alberto Filippi, told reporters that the author of the attack jumped over the wall when about 40 children were there.
He walked into the nursery while they were playing on the playground and started “slashing with a hatchet”. At first, the attacks happened randomly.
According to reports heard by CNN some teachers from the Child Education Center (CEI) Cantinho do Bom Pastor, the scene of the crime, tried to defend the children from the man’s blows with an axe, but were unable to contain him.
At least four children died. According to firefighters, three boys and a girl, aged 5 to 7 years old.
Police officers stated that the man arrived at a Military Police battalion without showing any reaction or regret when he identified himself at the entrance.
Social workers and psychologists from the municipality assist family members and teachers on site.
The PM said that “when the criminal realized that the teachers were defending the children, he jumped over the wall again and left on his motorcycle. When he presented himself to the police, he did not say anything, he was silent ”.
The criminal left on a motorcycle towards the 10th BPM, where he surrendered and was forwarded to the Civil Police.
