The vice president of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), Bruno Dantas, in the exercise of the Presidency of the Court, presented a proposal for a formal statement to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) related to the TCU’s candidacy for the United Nations Council of Auditors, of the UN. The vacancy is occupied by Chile and the term ends in June 2024.
The Board is responsible for carrying out financial and compliance audits in order to ensure the regularity of the United Nations’ financial statements based on internal regulations and international auditing standards, as well as making recommendations to Organs audited bodies to improve governance and resource management.
“Performing audits in international organizations results in intense professionalization, technological advancement and organizational maturity, with a direct impact on institutional credibility”, explains Dantas in the document sent to Itamaraty.
For the exercise of its attributions, the UN annually transfers 4.5 million euros (approximately R$ 24 million) to each institution that is a member of the Board of Auditors, during its six-year mandate. These resources allow for the cost of investments in training, technology, logistical support and administrative activities that can result in a lasting legacy for the TCU, especially with the strengthening and consolidation of our institutional capacity in the area of financial auditing.
The formalization of the Court’s interest is necessary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate the negotiations to formalize the candidacy and negotiation with the UN General Assembly, due to Brazil’s relationship with the organization.
According to the TCU army president, the Comptroller General of Chile, Jorge Bermúdez, and the President of the Portuguese Court of Auditors, José Tavares, have already expressed support for Brazil’s candidacy.
