Music that makes even mountains move. Literally: the stops of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour at Seattle’s Lumen Field on July 22 and 23 generated seismic activity equivalent to that of a magnitude 2.3. It was recorded by seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, who teaches geology at Western Washington University.
Taylor Swift sold out both Seattle dates: Saturday live they attended 72,171 peoplebreaking the attendance record of 70,000 set by U2 in 2011.
While his «swifties» danced and sang, they triggered the earthquake: the seismograph detected aseismic activity comparable to the famous «Beast Quake», in 2011, when fans of the Seattle Seahawks football team cheered after running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch had a touchdown run. Jackie Caplan-Auerbach explained to cnn that they compared seismic data from concerts and the 2011 football game.
Well, the «swifties» beat the supporters of the Seattle Seahawks: if the cheering after the touchdown lasted a couple of seconds, before turning off, the unrestrained dances, the songs at the top of their lungs, the rhythm, the loudspeakers that propagated the music of Taylor Swift went on for about ten hours, if you add up the two concert nights. A huge push of energy on the ground, so strong and persistent as to generate seismic activity, the «Swift Quake». «The shaking was twice as strong as the “Beast Quake”. Twice» explained the seismologist.
It may seem incredible, but it has already happened other times that concerts recorded seismic activity. It happened at a Foo Fighters live in 2011, in New Zealand, which was attended by 50,000 fans and, last year, at a concert by Garth Brooks, at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. But the seismic magnitudes on the Richter scale, on those two occasions, were not recorded.
The Eras tour continues tonight in Santa Clara, California and continues with six dates in Los Angeles next month to conclude the tour in the United States. It starts again on August 24, from Mexico City.
