On August 12, she had abandoned her baby. A few days later, however, the young Georgian mother of the little boy (who had been called Lorenzo and who will now be Gabriele) retraced her steps, and she decided to recognize the child before the managers of the registry office of the Municipality.
The 24-year-old had left her newborn in a canvas bag in Taranto. The baby had been found by a passerby that she was walking the dogs and had heard a cry coming from the dumpster area. The baby was in good condition, clean and perfumed. His mother had given birth to him shortly before, in the house of the elderly woman for whom she worked as a home assistant. The child was taken to the Taranto hospital and entrusted to the care of the neonatology department.
The acknowledgment of her son represents a significant turning point for the young woman, and clearly and irreversibly indicates her will to assume the role of mother in all respects. But her decision does not automatically mean that the child is entrusted to her: it will be the Juvenile Court, which will start a legal procedure, to decide the future of Gabriel. At the same time, criminal investigations also continue, because the young woman has been accused of abandoning a minor.
The police had identified her a few hours after the abandonment of the child, thanks to the recordings of the road surveillance cameras: the woman had been hospitalized due to the consequences of the birth and had justified her gesture by saying: «I left him on the street because I was afraid of losing my job».
