At least 91 people died on Friday (5) after a tanker truck exploded outside Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, according to officials in the West African country.
Mohamed Lamrane Bah, director of communications for Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), told CNN that several people were also in critical condition after the explosion.
Authorities transferred the wounded to hospitals and collected the bodies, and the rescue effort at the scene ended, Bah added.
Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr said in a Facebook statement that she “was saddened to hear of an explosion along the Bai Bureh road in Wellington after a truck carrying fuel collided with another truck.”
“The video and photos circulating on social media are harrowing,” added Aki-Sawyerr.
“My condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims of the explosion. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
