T. Theodorikakos: The night pay of the police officers is increasing

The increase in the nightly pay of police officers was announced by the Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, speaking today on the morning news show “Society Mega Hour”. The minister also referred to the dangers of the police profession, crime, the prevention of illegal immigration flows and the efforts being made to upgrade police training.

With regard to the increase in the night hours of the police, Mr. Theodorikakos said that by a Joint Ministerial Decision of the Ministers of Citizen Protection and Finance, the limit for payment for the night hours of the police is increased, from the 48 hours per month that was until now, to 64 hours .

“Our police officers are working these hours. It was a fair request, just like others that we have resolved during my tenure at the Ministry of Citizen Protection”, emphasized Mr. Theodorikakos.

In recognition of the dangerousness of the police profession, the minister stated: “The police profession is without any doubt a dangerous profession. We have proceeded together with the Ministry of Finance, in cooperation with the police unions, in the process of preparing a study, in order to in the coming years let’s see what can be done to officially recognize the profession of the police as dangerous”.

Regarding crime, he reiterated once again that from September 1st to June 30th, it has decreased by 30% compared to the time before the coronavirus quarantine and emphasized that 2,500 police officers operate daily in the neighborhoods of Athens. He also once again expressed his satisfaction with the reaction of two of the police officers who were injured during the armed clash in Agioi Anargyrou with the attacker who fell dead, after the previous gunshot in Patisia and he also underlined that the training of the police officers is improving.

Finally, the minister made a special reference to the pressures from the migration flows, stressing that the threat in Evros is a daily one, as around 1,000 migrants try to cross the border every day, but are prevented by the Police.

“Only in the first 6 months, across the country, there were more than 500 arrests of illegal traffickers, who traffic in human life by committing a crime, noted the minister and added: “We are not going to stop, we will continue this action along with serious control for the illegal immigrants present in the Attica basin. In the last 6 months, the Police have made over 1,500 arrests, here in the center of Athens, while a total of 9,000 illegal immigrants have returned to their homelands in the last 1.5 years. It is, therefore, an overall intervention, an organized intervention by the Greek Police, in order to deal with the problem of illegal immigration.”
