Syrian rebels say they have surrounded Damascus, but army denies withdrawing

Syria’s rebels are approaching the capital Damascus, after forces opposed to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime launched a surprise offensive in the country.

The rebels say they have begun their “final phase” of the siege of the capital. The Syrian army denies having withdrawn from Damascus, accusing the rebels of spreading panic.

In the south, a new revolt erupted across Daraa province, with rebels claiming to have seized a key military base as they advanced towards the capital.

In western Syria, rebels are speeding towards the large city of Homs – where residents are fleeing potential hostilities between government and anti-regime forces.
