Syria: The Palestinian President in Damascus, first visit to 16 years

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today met Syrian transitional president Ahmad al -Sarah to Damascus, on his first visit to Syria for the last 16 years. According to a Syrian government source, this visit aims to discuss ways to strengthen the syrup -market relations and “threats” that both sides face. According to estimates by the UN Relief and Works Service for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), 560,000 Palestinians lived in Syria before the conflict in the country broke out in 2011. Today it is estimated that their number is 438,000, of which 40% was displaced during 2011-2023. Abbas’ last visit to Damascus was in 2009, during which he met with President Bashar al -Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 by a coalition of Islamist rebels led by Sarah.
