A condition for the normalization of relations with Ankara is the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory, Syria announced today, responding to the proposal made last week by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after the two countries severed relations in 2011. The Syrian Foreign Ministry reiterated the firm position of Damascus, stressing that any normalization “should be based on clear foundations” and the first of these is “the withdrawal of the forces that are illegally in Syrian territory and the fight against terrorist groups that threaten not only the security of Syria but also of Turkey”.
