Scenes of chaos prevail in the Aleppo her Syria with the world mass-creating new graves to bury the dead of the mighty earthquakewhile digging with their hands in the wreckage to locate any survivors.

Umm Ibrahim, along with other relatives of the missing, stands near the rubble, holding a rosary. She prays and wipes her tears with a handkerchief. “I’m waiting for the rescuers to get my children who were buried here. It’s seven. I put my hopes in God,” says the 56-year-old woman who spent the night in a car near the collapsed building. Umm Ibrahim ran to this building when the earthquake struck in the early hours of Monday. “I haven’t drunk anything, I haven’t eaten anything since then. How can I, since my children are starving, buried in the earth?’ says the woman, breaking into sobs.

Mahmoud Ali, who also reached the site of the collapse before dawn, is impatient, worried that the rescue operation is being delayed. “My folks didn’t have time to get out of the building. They’re all down there. I heard their phone ringing when I called them, but then nothing, the battery must have died (…) I hope they will last until the excavator arrives.”

A strange quiet reigns in the city, where shops and restaurants remain closed. Many residents, after spending the night in parks or in their cars, fearing aftershocks, returned to their homes.

Many buildings of Aleppo collapsed and the famous ancient citadel was damaged. In the New Cemetery, gravediggers have been opening graves for the victims of the earthquake since the morning. Due to a lack of ambulances, vans transport the bodies as soon as they are pulled from the wreckage.
