Although the US Chamber of Deputies Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan was not publicly supported by President Joe Biden, the visit could benefit his government, according to an analysis by the coordinator of the Faap International Relations course, Fernanda Magnotta, in an interview with CNN this Wednesday (3).
“Biden calms the mood by saying that he has nothing to do with the visit, but we know that, symbolically, it benefits him,” he said.
In Magnotta’s assessment, there are two main hypotheses regarding the objectives of the trip at this time.
The first of the objectives, according to the professor, would be related to the strengthening of North American domestic issues. “It has to do with the legislative elections in the United States, it has to do with American public opinion and, therefore, it is still something for domestic consumption within the country”
Still in this sense, the visit could “bring a message that is widely accepted, especially to this Democratic electorate, to say that they are aligned with an agenda of values, to show that the United States remains strong in international politics. And therefore, there is no such threat of decline,” he analyzed.
On the other hand, there are also the geopolitical issues of the current scenario. “Of course it does not fail to connect with the reality of the crisis in Ukraine. We have seen this Sino-Russian rapprochement in recent months and the United States resenting it a lot and realizing the long-term effects that this can have in terms of challenging the world order,” he explained.
Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday (2) and left this Wednesday (3), around 7 am, Brasília time, after meeting with the island’s president and promising solidarity with the territory.
“As much as it is a personal trip, and it [Nancy]in this case, institutionally represents Congress, does not stop serving the Biden administration as a ‘nudge’ on the Chinese and Russians, which comes in handy in a positive way”, reiterated Magnotta.
