SXSW: Jane Fonda warns about the importance of taking action against the climate crisis

In a conversation mediated by behavioral scientist Sweta Chakraborty, actress and activist gave statements that demonstrated his indignation with the current situation in several areas, such as politics and the environment, and exchanged experiences with Fenton, also an activist and author of the book “The Activist's Media Handbook: Lessons from 50 Years as a Progressive Agitator” (“Activist’s Media Handbook: Lessons from 50 Years of a Progressive Agitator”, in free translation).

Just before starting to speak, Fonda asked everyone to sit down, including photographers and videographers recording the event, because they were blocking the audience's view. This attitude alone from the actress provoked applause and excited screams from the spectators.

Quoting Greta Thunberg – “don't look for hope, look for action and hope will come” – the actress shared with the audience how activism helped lift her out of depression.

“When I went to Washington to protest and was arrested, I no longer felt depressed. Every time I act, hope comes,” said Fonda, referring to the series of protests organized by Greenpeace and called “Fire Drill Fridays”.

“70% of Americans are concerned about climate change, but when asked why they don't do anything about it, they respond, 'No one asked me.' So this big 'no one asked me' was our target when we did Fire Drill Fridays. Calling people to action, doing more than just being worried,” he explained.

The 86-year-old actress also spoke about the importance of unity in the fight against climate change.

“If you are smart enough to join organizations, and not try to do it alone, then you will meet new people, new friends, who have the same values ​​as you. And then you discover that it's fun to be an activist. Especially when we know it’s possible to solve this problem,” she says. “We have the wrong people in charge and we can change that. We are more numerous than them.”
