Futurist Amy Webb presented, on Saturday (9), during her panel at SXSW, her definition of generation T. On the occasion, the researcher presented her annual trend report on the future of technology at the festival.
For the North American, instead of adopting the acclaimed division between generations X, Y and Z, humanity needs to understand itself as a single generation, which is connected by the strong technological transformation that it is (and will continue) facing.
“Collectively, we are all going through something important right now, which makes us Generation T. We are the transition generation. Every person alive today, every one of you, is part of a great transition, which means our society will be very different when that transition is complete,” explained Webb.
She argues that people have much more control over their own future than they imagine and bets on the collective so that humanity can go through this transition.
“The technology super cycle is here. He will change the course of human history, but we do not need to submit to him. We can help each other through this big transition,” he says.
According to Webb, analyzing long-term trends and profound transformations are more important than observing what is “in fashion”. During her panel, she cited Stanley cups, which are popular right now, and the wearing of panties outside shorts, pants and skirts in the 2000s as examples of ephemeral trends.
“Trends are long-term patterns that indicate a direction of change over time,” he explains.
