Sweden: Europe cannot depend on just one country for energy

Europe cannot depend on a single country for energy emphasizes its Minister of Energy, Business and Industry Sweden Emma Bush. Asked about the dependence on Russia and the message from the Swedish EU presidency during an interview with Brussels correspondents in Kiruna, Sweden (on the occasion of the start of the presidency), Bush noted that “Europe must learn from the war in Ukraine.”

“Europe cannot be as dependent on a single country as it was on the Russia for natural gas. This is very important when it comes to the green transition and the dependence we now have on China. 90% of the rare earths we need are produced or refined in China, 60% of lithium. This is not sustainable. We must increase our independence in the EU,” he said.

At the same time, regarding discovery of a rare earth deposit in Kiruna, stated that “this is important news because it is the largest find we know of in Europe”. He also noted that “it is important if we want to be able to proceed with the green transition. All these rare earth elements are important for electric carson wind turbines, on new technology that paves the way for the future of the EU. That’s why we need these kinds of findings.”
