A suspect is in custody after four, possibly five, shootings left four people injured along a stretch of Interstate 5 in the Seattle and Tacoma areas of Washington state, according to authorities.
The shootings follow a recent spike in gun incidents on roads in King County, which includes Seattle, according to KING5, a Seattle affiliate. CNN .
A car with California license plates was identified in connection with the incident. The suspected shooter was taken into custody after Pierce County police located the vehicle, King County Trooper Rick Johnson of the Washington State Patrol said.
Authorities tracked down the suspect — who has not yet been identified — at an apartment complex in Tacoma, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Darren Moss Jr. told CNN . After the suspect left the complex, officers used batons to disable the vehicle, Moss added.
Footage from a body camera video released by the department shows the officer ordering the suspect to walk backward with his hands up and then lie face down. As he was handcuffed, a voice that appeared to be the suspect said twice, “I am not resisting.”
The first shooting on I-5 occurred in the northbound lanes of 320th Street, where a passenger in a vehicle was injured, Johnson said in a social media post.
Another shooting occurred on “NB 5 near I-90 where another passenger was injured,” he added.
More shootings with injuries were reported along I-5 southbound near State Road 18 and near 54th Street in Pierce County, which is south of King County. The suspect vehicle in those shootings matched the earlier description of a white Volvo with California license plates, Johnson said.
Two women were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. One is in intensive care in serious condition and the second is also in serious condition, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg told CNN on Tuesday morning (3). Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Kaila Lafferty said one of the victims is 20 years old.
Traffic on southbound Interstate 5, south of 320th Street in Federal Way, was briefly stopped Tuesday morning as officers searched the roadway for evidence, according to the state patrol.
There were 577 calls reporting a traffic crime involving a firearm between February 2023 and February 2024, KING5 reported, citing data from the Washington State Patrol. That’s a 70% increase from the number of incidents reported between March 2019 and March 2020.
