AMD has unveiled the first Ryzen 7020 Mendocino processors for laptops, and they are aimed at a very different audience than desktop PC chips. Ryzen 7020 is positioned as a budget series designed to increase the performance of entry-level laptops. The chip configuration includes processor cores based on the old Zen 2 architecture (they are upgraded and optimized for the latest TSMC 6nm process), RDNA 2 graphics (Radeon 610M), and support for LPDDR5 memory.
There are three processor models in total: Ryzen 5 7520U, Ryzen 3 7320U and Athlon Gold 7220U. The 4-core, 8-thread Ryzen 5 7520U is clocked at 2.8GHz base and 4.3GHz boost. It has 6MB cache and integrated Radeon 610M graphics. The Ryzen 3 7320U offers the same specs but at a lower clock speed of 2.4GHz and 4.1GHz respectively. Particularly budget-conscious buyers can choose the dual-core Athlon Gold 7220U with a base frequency of 2.4 GHz and a maximum of 3.7 GHz. It has 5MB cache and Radeon 610M graphics. The TDP of all three processors is 15W.

Other features include two 32-bit memory channels supporting up to 32GB LPDDR5 and the latest VCN 3.0 video decoding engine through the use of AV1 and VP9 codecs. In terms of I/O interfaces, the new AMD Mendocino processors support two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, two USB 2.0, one USB 2.0 for SBIO, and four GPP PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes. This is very similar to the configuration AMD used in Van Gogh’s single-chip system for the Steam Deck portable console. The company promises more than 12 hours of battery life for laptops based on new processors.
The first laptops based on the new series of Ryzen and Athlon processors will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year, starting at $399 (approximately 24,400 rubles). Acer, HP and Lenovo are already preparing their devices.
