Covid-free islands continue to be at the center of the debate on the upcoming summer holidays. By now we have understood, as we have told you here, that the islets that are difficult to reach have a natural, geographic defense, we could say, against the pandemic. And in fact, there are several Greek islands that have just been touched by Covid19. A fortune that the Greek government wants to preserve: to protect the population of the less populous and more difficult to reach islands started a vaccination campaign called “Eleftheria”, which means in modern Greek freedom.
This vaccination campaign, as Emy Anagnostopoulou, director of the Greek tourism agency, explained to the Daily Mail predicts that “by the end of April 69 or 70 islands will be fully vaccinated, of which 61 are small and medium-sized with a resident population of up to 3500. inhabitants, plus some larger ones ». In gallery find ten of the islands involved in the program, including the well-known Kastellorizo, the first to have completed the complete vaccination of the population.
The choice of favoring small islands – some of which are distant from the major centers – is not accidental. As explained by the Greek Embassy in Italy, in fact, the inhabitants of these realities have an advanced age on average, they populate islands that often do not have hospitals and to reach the nearest one in case of emergency, special transports are necessary which they can also be very costly.
Eleftheria it was therefore born primarily as a campaign to protect a part of the Greek population that could find itself in difficulty in the face of the massive spread of the virus, especially during the tourist season. As stated in the The Guardian Marios Themistocleous of the Greek Ministry of Health, “We have decided to vaccinate the entire population at the same time with the aim that when they start receiving tourists, the island’s residents are fully vaccinated and protected”.
Understandably, this initiative has attracted international attention and elected the Greek covid-free islands among the favorite destinations for summer travel. International tourists will be welcomed in Greece from mid-May but, as the Deputy Minister for Tourism Sofia Zacharaki explained, it will still be necessary to respect one of these three options (the same ones spoken of in Italy and more generally in Europe in reference to travel): being vaccinated, having a molecular swab, or having overcome the disease. The updated measures for accessing Greece are however available and constantly updated on the government website.
