US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “will have the opportunity to have an exchange of views in the coming weeks,” US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters today on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Germany.
Without elaborating on the form or date of this future conversation, Sullivan assured that both at the G7 level and at NATO level there was “always more convergence on the challenges” associated with Chinese ambitions.
However, the US National Security Adviser stressed that “competition does not mean confrontation”, at a time when relations between the two superpowers are particularly tense, whether over the war in Ukraine, Taiwan or economic issues.
He said Western nations were not seeking a confrontation with China or dividing the world into rival blocs, but were seeking to ensure that China and other countries adhered to a set of “road rules” that were fair, understandable and agreed upon by all.
