Sudanese authorities have imposed an overnight curfew in two towns in the southeastern state of Blue Nile, near the border with Ethiopia.
This happened after days of clashes between rival tribes, in which 31 people were killed.
Clashes have spread to several cities since Wednesday, with the killing of a villager. Security forces intervened and brought the situation under control, according to the Blue Nile regional government.
In their announcement, the local authorities refer to 39 injured and 16 damaged shops. A curfew was imposed in the towns of Damazine and Roseires. Residents of the area, however, told Reuters that riots continued today in many areas and that no security forces had been deployed there.
The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors said in a statement that victims of the conflicts were also transferred to the hospital in Damazine and Roseires today. This hospital is not adequately equipped and the Commission appealed to the Ministry of Health to provide logistical support and arrange for the injured to be airlifted to other facilities.
Despite the peace agreement signed by some rebel groups in 2020, there are sporadic violent incidents in various parts of Sudan, including Darfur. The strongest component of the Northern Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, active in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, did not sign the agreement.
Sudan’s military seized power by toppling the transitional civilian government in October 2021, sparking mass protests that have continued for eight months.
