The rector of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Ricardo Marcelo Fonseca, told CNN this Saturday (2) that a prank in which about 20 students received severe burns is being investigated, and that those involved may be expelled from the institution.
“A disciplinary procedure has already begun here. Our disciplinary board has already preventively removed 25 students who were involved in this specific hazing in Palotina so that they do not interfere with the fairness of the investigations that have already been initiated,” he said.
According to Fonseca, the process, which takes place in parallel with the police investigation, “can lead to a suspension or even the termination of these students from our university”. Four students were arrested in the act by the police.
According to the Civil Police of Paranáthe students were forced to ask for money at the traffic light in front of the university, after which the veterans cornered them in a vacant lot.
The new students would have been forced to kneel while the older ones threw a product at their backs, which would have caused serious bodily harm. The burns were 1st and 2nd degree.
At the scene, a liter of creolin, a toxic product for cleaning and disinfection, was found, according to police information. So far, four people have been arrested in the act and will answer for very serious bodily injury and illegal embarrassment.
“The university naturally received this with all the astonishment and indignation, we have not seen a situation of hazing with violence and harassment like this case here in our university for many years”, said Fonseca.
The dean said that “the world is no longer the same as the last century in this matter of hazing, and the university has been campaigning and raising awareness for a long time so that this does not happen, or at least forms of solidary hazing”.
