A high school student at a school in Ceilândia, in the Federal District, gave a black teacher a steel sponge on International Women’s Day.
The delivery of the item was recorded by classmates and went viral on social media, with internet users pointing out the racist content of the “gift”.
The DF Department of Education reported that the school has autonomy to conduct the case and said it repudiates any type of prejudice.
The school board said it had met with the student and those responsible and also with the teacher. The student was instructed to write an apology and retraction to be read in public in the classroom and other actions will be promoted to raise awareness among school students.
The Union of Teachers in the Federal District (Sinpro-DF) expressed its solidarity with the teacher “victim of a misogynistic and racist attack” and declared “its repudiation of any attitude that involves the crimes of racism and misogyny at any time and place on the planet , mainly in Brazil and in public schools in the Federal District.”
“The action filmed and disseminated on digital networks demonstrates the hatred of women and people with black skin. It is a double crime – racism and misogyny”, says the note published by Sinpro-DF.
The Union also adds that the school’s act of asking the student to write a letter and read it in public apologizing and retracting “is not enough to repair the depth and extent of the embarrassment, suffering and pain that marked not only the teacher, but also everyone who lived the scene”.
In a note, he added that the episode reveals a failure of the DF government “which does not prioritize anti-racist and inclusive education, even having a legal device for this – Law nº 10.639/03 –, which is not put into practice in schools” .
Sinpro-DF also made itself available to schools to present proposals to confront racism in the school environment.
The Civil Police of the Federal District said that it became aware of the case through social networks and determined a preliminary investigation so that the author and the teacher are heard.
