Strong earthquake occurred in the early hours of Sunday (04:05 Greek time) in Papua New Guinea, with the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimating that it was 5.9 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued. Local authorities have not reported any casualties or damage as of this stage, and no tsunami alert has been issued.
THE Papua New Guinea is located on the so-called ring of fire of the Pacific, a zone where due to the friction of tectonic plates the seismic and volcanic activity is intense.
In July 2020, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the capital Port Moresby, but no major damage was reported.
In February 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s highlands causing landslides that buried entire communities. At least 125 people lost their lives.
It is noted that the earthquake data come from Geodynamic Institute of Athens or from Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute are solutions derived from the automatic computer system, without the participation of a seismologist. They are constantly updated with the arrival of new data.
