Rog Strix Scar 15 is a premium gaming laptop from ROG. It is simply fast and extremely powerful. It is not a laptop that you can carry around for official work and is meant for hard-core gaming.
Performance
This latest model, the Scar 15 is equipped with the most powerful specs from the 240hz, 3 milliseconds display to the 8 core 16 threads i7 10875H. An 8 core CPU in the laptop combined with the RTX 2070.
Other gaming CPUs use up to 60 or 70 Watts of power, but in turbo mode, this laptop consumes up to 120 watts. So, in terms of power, it beats every laptop in the gamers’ republic.
Speed
The Scar 15’s speed is overclocked to 3200 megahertz. During memory consuming tasks like multimedia related works or animations, it works very smoothly and efficiently. As per Intel’s claims, in theory, an i7 with 10875H supposedly can reach 5.1 GHz. However, in reality, the highest it could actually get up to is 4.8 GHz, and that too, for a brief time. Normally it would stay at around 4.5 to 4.6 GHz.
CPU Temperature
While playing heavier titles like ‘Call of Duty: Warzone,’ the CPU temperature often stays at around 90 degrees Celsius. This is not what you would expect from a machine that has a liquid metal thermal technology and that claims to always remain cool.
If you just play lighter titles, then you just need to set it in performance or silent mode. It will remain cool but of course, the performance would also differ.
So, it is important to choose the right fan mode depending on the demands of your game.
Design
This laptop brings an amazing gaming feel.
The palm rest is very spacious with some extra space on the left side. The keyboard is not at all cramped up and is pretty comfortable.
The palm rest area also has a thin matte finish. So, it feels very smooth and soft to the touch, with a ‘fingerprint-resistant’ finish.
The keyboard system is also well optimized for gaming. All the regularly used function keys like adjusting volumes, turning on and off the microphones, adjusting the fan speeds, or opening the armory crate app are all separated and put on the top, so they are easier to locate.
The keyboard typing feel is soft, light, and tactile. You can also turn on the Numpad on the mouse pad, but it can get a bit distracting and annoying for some people.
The exterior is smoother than the previous laptops in this line with an anodized finish on the lid that brings a premium feel to the laptop.
This laptop has the Keystone 2, which is a physical key that allows the users to personalize their settings and also allows them direct access to their private storage space, called the ‘shadow drive.’
However, there is no webcam.
All the keys are well-lit with the signature RGB LEDs and the chassis also carries the RGB strand running on all four sides.
Battery
The 66-Watt power battery gives around two hours of use time, and one hour with all the battery saving features off and a little heavier gaming going on. This is a major downside for a gaming laptop.
Speakers
The surround sound quality is great and without any distortion even at a higher volume. However, the sound may reach up to 10 decibels, which can get harsh on the ears. They are not comparable to external speakers, but they are decent if not the best.
Screen
The display is upgraded to 240 hertz, with a 3ms response time, which is very nice. The 300 Hz screen renders 248 FPS and that is brilliant for people who are into e-sports and first-person shooter games.
Overall Verdict
It is a smooth machine that provides an excellent gaming experience with an amazing display and powerful specs. It is big and quite heavy, and its fans often get quite loud too.
The extra features like the keystone are not really necessary, but those things are to attract and excite the ‘real’ gamers.
For casual gamers who want a machine that can both game and serve other purposes like content creation, this laptop is not for them.
