Storm Julia forms near Colombia and Venezuela and threatens Nicaragua

THE tropical storm Julia formed in the extreme south of the Caribbean, near the La Guajira Peninsula in Colombia. The phenomenon registers maximum sustained winds of 64 km/h and should strengthen in the next 48 hours, before reaching Nicaragua on Sunday morning (9), according to the National Hurricane Center.

“Julia is expected to become a hurricane overnight Saturday,” the center said. The official forecast indicates that it will have a touchdown intensity of 136 km/h, which would make Julia a Category 1 hurricane.

The Colombia hurricane watch has been updated to a hurricane watch for the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

In Nicaragua, a hurricane watch was issued from Bluefields to the border with Honduras. For the northern areas of Honduras, there is a tropical storm watch for Punta Patuca.

Venezuela suffers damage due to the passage of tropical depression

The rains due to the passage through Venezuela of tropical phenomenon number 13 (formerly tropical wave 41) left one person dead in the state of Sucre, at least four injured – two in Caracas and two in the state of Carabobo, located in northwest Venezuela.

About 22,000 houses were affected, of which about 17 collapsed totally or partially, in addition to trees that were felled, the deputy minister of Risk Management and Civil Protection, Carlos Pérez Ampueda, told the channel on Thursday (6). state-owned VTV.

The specialist assured that more than 20,000 employees were deployed to the national territory as a preventive measure.

He also warned that, while the heavy rains continue, the population should stay away from rivers, beaches and areas that present risks, noting that the strong storms and thunderstorms will last for the next 24 hours.

On Thursday night, President Nicolás Maduro presented a balance of the rains registered in the last hours, in which he assured that the areas most affected are the central, Andean and llanera zones, after the tropical wave became a tropical depression.

Previously, the Vice President of Citizen Security, Remigio Ceballos, highlighted that the weather conditions that affect the Capital District and states such as La Guaira, Aragua and some lowland areas, among other locations, are constantly being monitored.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) explained that the rains have already reached the east coast and have been gaining strength as it becomes a tropical depression, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and strong and moderate gusts to moderate rain.
