Stoltenberg on Koran burning: Actions that are offensive and reprehensible are not necessarily illegal

In response to a question about the incident with the burning a copy of Koran in Stockholm and whether it could affect Sweden’s chances of joining the Alliance ahead of the Vilnius summit, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that he understands the feelings this causes, stressing that “actions that are offensive and reprehensible are not necessarily illegal in a mainstream legal system.”

He pointed out that there have been both anti-Turkey and anti-NATO protests in Sweden, which although he doesn’t like them, he defends the protesters’ right to disagree, “it is part of freedom of expression“, he said.

Also, according to the Athens News Agency, he underlined the importance of making progress in finalizing the accession by referring to the agreement with the Turkish president for a high-level meeting planned for next Thursday in Brussels, with the participation of foreign ministers, National Security advisers and head of secret services. Finally, he reiterated that Sweden has fulfilled its commitments.
