Stellantis invests in Turin to boost production of low-emission vehicles

Stellantis selected the historic Italian automobile city of Turin for an investment in the production of low-emission vehicles and a center for recycling cars and parts.

The French-Italian group has signed an agreement with its Belgian partner Punch Powertrain to increase production of electrified dual-clutch transmissions (eDCT) for hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, the automaker said on Tuesday. thursday (20th).

Producing and selling more electric and hybrid vehicles is a key point in plans announced in March by Stellantis Chief Executive Carlos Tavares to double revenue to €300 billion a year by 2030.

Tavares said on Tuesday that the group is investing a “double-digit” amount of millions of euros in the gearbox upgrade, without giving a precise figure.

The Mirafiori complex will also be the company’s main hub for the ‘circular economy’ business, with a focus on vehicle refurbishment and disassembly and component reuse, with Tavares seeing a prolonged shortage of raw materials.

Union officials said the recycling operation could create work for 550 people by 2025.

“Raw material shortages will continue over the next decade and we think that we can extend the life of the materials we use, this will be very important for our company,” said Tavares.

The group aims to increase recycling revenues by 10 times to €2 billion by 2030.

Tavares said production of the model could easily double from 45,000 units in 2021 and then triple, as restrictions are not tied to battery capacity or availability, but rather to other parts affected by the semiconductor supply crisis.

The new facility is expected to start production in the second half of 2024. It will complement the capacity of a factory in the French city of Metz, supplying all relevant Stellantis factories in Europe, with a total annual production of 1.2 million units at both sites, Tavares said.
