On the contrary, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and most likely the next Chancellor Friedrich Mertz will not go to Rome. According to a statement by the federal presidency, Frank-Walter Steinmeier will lead the German delegation which will attend Saturday at the funeral of the late Pope Francis at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Government spokesman Stephen Hebbestrait has confirmed, for his part, that Olf Saltz would accompany the federal president, jointly with senior officials of the Federal Parliament and the Federal Council. A CDU spokesman clarified that Friedrich Mertz, “in consultation with the federal president and the Chancellor”, will not attend the funeral of Pope Francis. Source: RES
