The states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro declared mourning for the death presenter Silvio Santos. The government of São Paulo decreed seven days of official mourning . “Our condolences to the Abravanel family, his friends, the SBT employees and the Brazilians of various generations who considered Silvio Santos one of their most admired personalities,” said Governor Tarsício de Freitas. The governor emphasized that Silvio chose São Paulo as his home since the 1950s.
“Founder of the Brazilian Television System (SBT), he became one of the symbols of Brazilian communication thanks to the simple, direct and charismatic way with which he dealt with the public”, he states in a note.
In a statement, the government of Rio de Janeiro mourned the death: “Today Brazil bids farewell to one of the greatest icons of our television, Silvio Santos. He spent 93 years of his life and almost 60 years of his career dedicated to bringing joy, entertainment and inspiration to the Brazilian people.” Signed by Governor Cláudio Castro, the note of condolence states that the presenter’s legacy “will never be forgotten!”
Rio de Janeiro decreed three days of mourning for the “irreplaceable” loss . The Rio government also said that Silvio’s voice, charisma and story will remain eternal in everyone’s memory.
“I express my deepest condolences to the Abravanel family, friends and all colleagues at the SBT television station,” said Castro. The governor also paid tribute on social media.
The presenter’s death was confirmed on SBT’s social media. In a note of condolence, the hospital said that the presenter died at 4:50 am, due to bronchopneumonia after infection with Influenza (H1N1).
