AEPD director Mar España Martí called on Worldcoin to immediately stop collecting biometrics of Spanish residents through iris scans in exchange for tokens, and to stop using the data already collected. At the beginning of the week, AEPD already warned Worldcoin about this, giving the project management 72 hours to implement the recommendation. The agency is concerned that the crypto company is collecting information on minors.
The official noted that Spain became the first European country to speak out against Worldcoin.
“We took action and raised the alarm in Europe. This problem affects all EU citizens, so regulators need to join forces and take coordinated action,” said the AEPD director.
The Worldcoin project is not available in China and India. Last year, Kenyan authorities accused the project of illegal activities in the country and suspended Worldcoin’s activities in their country. At the beginning of 2024, the Hong Kong police began to investigate the project and searched six local Worldcoin offices.
Recently, WorldCoin co-founder Sam Altman announced that the number of daily users of the World App wallet has exceeded one million, despite opposition from law enforcement agencies in various countries.
