A resident of Mallorca arrested on the charge of provocation bodily injuries, after infecting at least 22 people with the new coronavirus because he went to work and gym although he had symptoms of Covid-19, the island police announced today.
Authorities launched an investigation in late January, following a sharp rise in cases in Manacor. At the time, information was circulating that an employee had been infected but was “hiding his illness,” police said.
A few days before this outbreak was identified, the man showed symptoms, a fact that caused concern to his colleagues at work. However, he did not want to return home and went for a molecular test after finishing his work. Without waiting for the result, he went back to work the next day and, in addition, went to the gym.
His boss at work, like all the staff, insisted on returning home because he could infect everyone. They later explained to police that he had a fever, “over 40 degrees”.
However, he ignored them and spent all day at work, circulating almost everywhere. In fact, he deliberately took off his mask when he coughed and told them: “I will infect you all with the coronavirus”.
After learning that he was positive later that day, his colleagues went to see him too. Five of them tested positive and infected many members of their family, including three one-year-olds. Three people who came in close contact with him at the gym and transmitted the virus to their relatives were also infected.
According to police, none of the 22 patients needed to be treated.
