The São Paulo State Police ombudsman, Cláudio Silva, reiterated that operations in Baixada Santista represent a “scenario of massacre and humanitarian crisis”. The position came this Thursday (7), following statements by Guilherme Derrite, secretary of Public Security for the state.
During a commission at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, on Wednesday (6), Derrite stated that there was “no excess” by military police during the operations carried out in Baixada Santista.
“No police correctional body received any complaint, information or official report that there was an abuse of authority by the police forces. If this happens, it will absolutely certainly be investigated (..) We cannot, based on an informal report, install a procedure (…) Therefore, I do not recognize any excess, until this officially reaches the police forces”, he stated. .
Between January and this Thursday (7), the São Paulo State Police Ombudsman's Office sent 44 letters, addressed to the Military Police Internal Affairs and Deinter 6, in addition to the General Command of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo, Public Ministry, Governor of State of São Paulo, Secretary of Public Security of the State of São Paulo, Presidency of Alesp, Alesp Human Rights Commission, Alesp Public Security Commission, Amnesty International and the National Human Rights Ombudsman's Office of the Ministry of Justice and Citizenship.
According to the ombudsman, images, reports, police reports and expert evidence were requested, and “no response has been received so far”. The Ombudsman's Office has surpassed the mark of more than 3,500 cases in which the PM's Internal Affairs Division does not provide us with any answers.
Regarding Operation Shield of 2023, “none of the letters sent to the state's Scientific Police were responded to. The same can be said in relation to the threats to life suffered by the Ombudsman, where only the Public Prosecutor's Office provided a response to the letters, with absolute silence from the Public Security Secretariat in this case too”, says the note.
