SP government promises home to all residents of the Moinho favela

The government of São Paulo said it will offer 1,500 housing to the residents of the Favela do Moinho, in the center of the capital . The government’s proposal is to remove families and turn the area into an urban park.

The new residences would be in the center of the capital, with more than 1,000 houses distributed between the neighborhoods of Brás, Vila Buarque, Campos Elisios and Barra Funda.

“The availability of these houses is designed to keep unchanged, as much as possible, the family dynamics of residents who choose to continue living in the central areas,” says the government in a press release.

For families who prefer other regions of the city, 499 properties were made available in neighborhoods such as Jaraguá, Vila Matilde, Chácara California, Ipiranga, Cachoeirinha, among others.

The Housing and Urban Development Company (CDHU) states that it has heard families about their particular needs to determine change.

According to the calculation of CNN members of the federal government began to carefully follow the process of removal of families from Favela do Moinho. The federal government requested details of the retreat planning and requested information about the housing policy of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) management.

The union owns most of the place where the community is and the assignment of the land is still in the negotiation phase.

The government of São Paulo justifies the eviction of the region due to the location of the community, which is between train lines and has a low possibility of flow, as it is a walled area and with only one entrance.

The community is also at the same level as the railway, exposing residents to risk during trains. “The movement of compositions causes trepidations and noise levels above tolerable for more than 18h daily,” says the government note.

In addition, the site has a high density of housing and high incidence of exposed wiring. Two large fires have already been recorded and left dead and homeless.

Residents and community leaders in the region ask the government to negotiate with families and that a possible withdrawal be accompanied.
