South Korea’s president has declared martial law

South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol has declared “martial law,” accusing the country’s opposition of controlling parliament and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities. Yun said he had no choice but to resort to such a measure to preserve free and constitutional order, saying opposition parties have hijacked the parliamentary process to plunge the country into crisis. Yoon Suk Yeol made the announcement during a TV briefing. “I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eliminate the failed pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order,” said the Yoon. Yun has struggled since taking office in 2022 to advance his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.
