South Korea: Ruling party does not support impeachment of interim president

The People Power Party, which is in power in South Korea, called on the opposition to stop the attempt to impeach interim President Han Duck-soo.

The country’s main opposition party has presented a project to remove Han and is expected to hold a vote this Friday (27).

This move could deepen the country’s constitutional crisis triggered by the imposition of Martial Law by President Yoon Suk Yeol. He was removed from office after a vote in Congress, but the measure is still being analyzed by a constitutional court.

“The Democratic Party’s deluge and tsunami of impeachments has now gone beyond paralyzing the government to completely devastating the affairs of state,” charged PPP acting chairman Kweon Seong-dong.

The opposition Democratic Party has threatened to try to impeach Han if he does not appoint three judges to fill vacancies on the Constitutional Court.

Parliament voted in favor of three nominees, but they have not yet been formally appointed by the head of state.
