Authorities in South Korea announced today that they are reinstating stricter rules of social distancing, a month and a half after they relaxed, as the number of new cases of covid-19 and critically ill patients increases exponentially.
From Saturday until January 2, the gatherings are limited to four people, while the opening hours of cafes, restaurants, which will now close at 21:00, as well as cinemas and other public places, which will close at 22: 00.
In addition, those who are not vaccinated will be able to dine in a restaurant on their own or have food at home.
Most of the restrictions in South Korea were eased in November as the covid-19 epidemic seemed to subside thanks to the vaccination campaign. About 88% of South Koreans have received two doses of the vaccine.
But the number of new cases has tripled in one month, with a record 7,850 new infections being recorded yesterday, Wednesday, while the country’s authorities estimate that this number will reach 20,000 daily cases in January.
“We will not be able to overcome this critical point unless we immediately limit this rise with strict measures of social distancing,” South Korean Prime Minister Kim Jong-un stressed today.
Today there are 7,622 new cases in the country, while the number of patients with covid-19 who are hospitalized in critical condition has reached 989. About 87% of beds in intensive care units in the metropolitan area of Seoul are occupied and about 81% nationally level.
