Sony is preparing its first 100-megapixel camera for smartphones

It’s been nearly three years since Samsung launched its first 108MP smartphone camera, and in 2022, it added a 200MP sensor to its range. At the same time, Samsung’s closest competitor, Sony, has yet to release a single sensor with a resolution of 100 megapixels or more. But, according to Chinese insider Digital Chat Station, Sony’s first 100-megapixel smartphone camera is already halfway through the official announcement.

According to the source, Sony’s first 100-megapixel sensor will be part of the Sony IMX8 series. Its technical characteristics are still kept secret. It is only known that Sony’s first 100MP sensor will not be aimed at flagships, as one might think, but at mid-range smartphones. With this in mind, it is logical to assume that this is clearly not the most powerful camera in the range of Sony. And chances are high that this sensor could be larger than a typical ½-inch 64MP camera.

In addition to the first 100-megapixel module, Sony is also working on the IMX9 series. These sensors will be more powerful than the IMX8 series and will compete with Samsung’s top cameras.
