“Sonic 2: The Movie” makes $71 million and becomes the biggest opening for a game adaptation

“Sonic 2: The Movie” took in $71 million on its North American box office debut, an indication that family audiences are starting to return to theaters.

The Paramount children’s film topped Sony’s “Morbius” and Michael Bay’s Universal adventure, “Ambulance: The Murder Day,” which opened to a disappointing $8 million in taking the top spot.

Ticket sales for “Sonic 2: The Movie” set a new benchmark for video game adaptations, replacing the opening weekend record set by its predecessor, 2020’s “Sonic: The Movie,” which grossed $58. million in its first three days of release.

“This is an excellent debut,” said David A. Gross, who heads the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “With solid reviews and very good viewership scores, ‘Sonic’ will have a strong run.”

Jeff Fowler returned to direct “Sonic 2: The Movie” after directing the original film, which grossed $319 million worldwide and set a record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation in North America.

In the film, Ben Schwartz returns to voice the speedy blue creature with a knack for busting bad guys, and Jim Carrey reprises his role as the mad scientist Doctor Robotnik, a combination that has proven to be a hit with moviegoers.

“Sonic 2: The Movie” cost $90 million, far more than the $40 million Bay and Universal paid for “Ambulance: The Murder Day.” That’s a relatively cheap price for “Ambulance”, which is loaded with explosives and special effects. However, the $40 million figure does not include the many millions spent on marketing and other efforts needed to publicize the film’s release.

The mediocre start of “Ambulance” is yet another sign of changing consumer tastes. The kind of physics-defying adrenaline rush that turned Bay’s past movies like “Armageddon” and “Pearl Harbor” into hits at the time hasn’t always worked these days.
