Head of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s special advisory department, the former foreign minister and former defense minister, Celso Amorim, told the CNN which sees “positive reactions” to the Brazilian president’s decision to raise the banner of building an agreement to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Moscow said, this Tuesday morning (23), that Putin is analyzing Lula’s proposals “to find political ways” to contain the escalation of the war in Ukraine.
Amorim spoke to the report this Thursday (23) after approval by the UN General Assembly of a document that condemns the invasion of Ukraine and reaffirms the United Nations charter, but mentions, at the request of Brazil, an appeal for the “cessation of hostilities”.
“What President Lula has been saying is that the invasion of Ukraine was a mistake, a historical and political mistake. Russia made a mistake, and its mistake cannot be compensated, but our position is one of concern with maintaining a war that has dragged on for a year,” says Amorim.
Lula’s adviser on international politics, the diplomat claims that the position adopted by the Brazilian president “is not easy”, but that “someone needs to talk about seeking alternatives”.
“An agreement, obviously, is the search for a solution that will not be totally satisfactory for either side involved”, he assesses. Amorim also mentions China’s alleged willingness to also submit proposals for a ceasefire. “The more proposals, the better.”
Amorim says that nothing will be put on the table until “there will be no concrete proposal until I speak with all the actors”, but that both today’s vote at the UN and the positions expressed by Moscow and Beijing are positive signs.
