Solar energy is close to becoming the 2nd largest source of generation in the country, says Absolar

The photovoltaic source is about to become the second largest generator of energy in Brazil, only behind the water matrix, according to the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar).

Data from the association show that in September Brazil surpassed a new historic mark of 20 gigawatts (GW) of installed power from the solar source. Adding the large-scale plants and the systems for generating electricity on roofs, facades and small plots of land, the number is equivalent to 9.6% of the country’s electricity matrix.

There are currently approximately 1.2 million residential solar systems installed, according to the association.

And that kind of energy is booming. According to data from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), from January to early October this year, solar energy grew by 44.4%, jumping from 13.8 GW to 20 GW.

In the last 120 days alone, the growth rate has been practically one GW per month, which puts the source in the third position of the Brazilian electrical matrix (June: 15.8 GW, July: 16.4 GW, August: 17.5 GW, September: 18.6 GW, October: 20 GW).

Investments exceed R$ 100 billion

The solar energy source has already brought about R$ 103.0 billion in new investments to Brazil, more than R$ 27.2 billion in public coffers and has generated more than 600,000 jobs since 2012, according to Absolar. With that, it also avoided the emission of 28.4 million tons of CO2 in the generation of electricity.

For Ronaldo Koloszuk, chairman of the Board of Directors of Absolar, the growth of the solar source is the perfect combination between sustainability and cheap energy, fundamental aspects in the decision-making of consumers and the productive sector.

“Finally, Brazil woke up to solar energy and its benefits, whose accelerated growth will soon place the photovoltaic source in the second position of the Brazilian electrical matrix”, he believes. “The source helps to diversify the country’s electricity supply, reducing pressure on water resources and the risk of further increases in the population’s electricity bill,” adds Koloszuk.

Also according to a survey by Absolar, in the segment of own energy generation, there are practically 13.5 GW of installed power from the solar source. This is equivalent to approximately R$ 73.9 billion in investments, R$ 17.2 billion in collections and 405 thousand jobs accumulated since 2012, spread across the five regions of Brazil. Solar technology is currently used in 99.9% of all self-generation connections in the country, leading the segment.

change in rules

Brazilian consumers who intend to install solar energy systems in homes and businesses have, as of October, 100 days to make the photovoltaic system viable before the rule changes approved by the National Congress.

According to the new Law 14300/2022, published at the beginning of this year, there is a transition period that guarantees, until 2045, the maintenance of the current rules for consumers who request the access opinion of their own solar generation systems until the end of January 6, 2022. 2023. After this date, the Law provides that new connections will have a gradual and staggered charge on the energy injected into the electricity grid.

In the midst of a record year of growth in the country, Absolar projects that the coming months will be even more heated for the small and medium-sized solar generation segment. According to data from the entity, from January to August 2022, more than 382,700 new photovoltaic systems were connected to the grid, a growth of more than 57% compared to the 243,600 added in the same period of the previous year.
