At MWC 2021, Qualcomm has unveiled an improved version of the flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset with the Plus prefix. The updated model received a higher clock speed of the Kryo 680 processor (3 GHz instead of 2.84 GHz), as well as the sixth generation AI Engine.
In fact, the powerful ARM Cortex-X1 processor shows an increase in clock speed to 2.995 GHz, but the company in its presentation rounds this figure to 3 GHz. Thus, the increase in performance compared to its predecessor is 5.45%. Otherwise, this is the same 5nm chipset with one high-performance Cortex-X1 core, three high-performance Cortex-A78 cores and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. The Adreno 660 accelerator is responsible for the graphics, but Qualcomm does not disclose information on it.
More significant is Qualcomm’s sixth generation AI Engine, which achieves 32 TOPS (trillion operations per second) performance. In comparison, the AI Engine in the Snapdragon 888 can perform 26 trillion operations per second. This means that the performance of the new AI chip has increased by 20%.
A mid-year upgrade for flagship chips is a common practice for Qualcomm. Similar approaches were taken for the Snapdragon 855 and 865, each of which received a Plus version. The company also launched the Snapdragon 870 earlier this year, which is sort of an improved version of the Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset.
The first smartphones with the Snapdragon 888 Plus SoC will be introduced in the third quarter of 2021. HONOR has already announced that it will use the new chipset in its upcoming flagship Magic 3, and Motorola, Vivo, Xiaomi and ASUS are also planning to release devices on this mobile platform.
